if you have no idea what we’re babbling about, you must be one of the disproportionately tiny group of people who haven’t had their lives changed by the @OldSpice guy. kickstarted by a tv spot (the kind of spot that makes you wonder what the creatives at W+K are smoking), the man your man could smell like, packed with random one-liners that internet memes are made of. or maybe you just weren’t reading our blog. we’re hurt.

in a fit of brilliance, the oldspice team took it a step further on twitter and facebook, replying user comments with their own video responses. previously unknown actor isaiah mustapha answered questions in the comfort of his manly bathroom, entertaining @AlyssaMilano, @guykawasaki, @kevinrose, interacting with @Starbucks and even helping a certain @jsbeals propose to his girlfriend.

why we think it’s brill:

finally! a campaign that makes no pretenses, pokes fun at itself, and manages to capture the rock solid frozen hearts of our cynical consumer without resorting to trickery, incentives or the usual guerrilla marketing ploys. people shared it because they enjoyed it, brand awareness has gone through the roof, and everyone wants to be that man your man could smell like.

no more ladies-scented body wash for us.

“anything is possible when your man smells like old spice, not a lady.” PRICELESS. we thought the previous old spice flex ad was funny, but boy, did they knock themselves out on this one. this, is what a frigin ad should be: engaging, entertaining and sticks in our heads. not some super-strategized-micro-analyzed hard sell act that’s dull, cheesy, self conscious and booooooooooring all rolled into one.

if you haven’t listened to the brilliant go album by jónsi, shame on you. after the hypnotizing work with sigur rós – and less than hypnotizing side project with partner alex – this solo record brings back that otherworldly soundscape we’ve grown to love so much, with some mind-numbing twist thrown in for… who knows what for. but get this, jónsi sings in… english! even more surprising is, after being so used to sigur rós’ hopelandic/gobbledigook language that no one (yet strangely, everyone) understands, we didn’t even notice the sudden lingua leap. perhaps it’s the way he’s perfected music-writing to the point where he’s not a singer anymore: he’s become an instrument that complements and completes the arrangement. in fact, you’d probably find yourself unable to make out ANY english words as he sings.

and strangely, you won’t find that a problem at all.

AND to top it off this bloke sean stiegemeier conducted the perfect marriage, putting the track kolniður to his amazingly shot icelandic volcanoes. sorry we’ve to stop here, our drool is short-circuiting the keyboard…

the cannes youtube digital 48-hour whatchamacallit is open once more. young creatives (under 28) are invited to create a viral 60-seconder creating awareness for a charity. last year’s contest winners from malaysia and israel did their countries and agencies proud.

probably the most talked about video this year is one scarily reminiscent of the infamous 2girls1cup (go look it up) and we wonder just how far one is willing to go for gold.

for the uninitiated, steam is a gaming distribution platform developed by valve. basically, now you have something else to spend your money on. on games. tasty tasty games (which steam lets you download straight to your computer).

and if valve sounds vaguely familiar, they’re the ones who brought us that uber hit – portal.

so what’s the big deal with steam anyway? now, its available on mac. okaayyyy… and?

and you get to download portal for free.

yesh. portal. free. free till the 24th. you have a week more to download steam and get your free portal. the only big problem with steam/portal x mac (and it’s not this)? you’ll probably end up blowing up your credit card purchasing games games games. it’s that awesome.

no one even remembers when casio’s g-shock was launched. yeah, it’s been that long. but hey, not only did it survive as a hockey puck, its cool factor also managed to weather the test of time (sic). this technicolor-on-ecstasy Man Box edition is a rainbow’s dream come true. it’s nice, happy and LOUD. in a good way. thank god, coz the metallic colored range before this almost made us puke.
